Who it is aimed at:

Crew and onboard staff requiring STCW Basic Safety Training

Entry requirements

Candidates must be aged 16 or over. This course contains some exercises that are physically demanding; any candidate in doubt about their fitness for such a course should consult their doctor prior to attendance.

Candidates will need to bring with them proof of identity (Passport, Seaman’s Discharge Book or other National Identification).

About this course

This 2.5 day course is designed to give candidates a basic understanding of types of fires, methods of extinguishing them and the onboard firefighting equipment. Candidates are introduced to basic equipment maintenance, the use of breathing apparatus and search and rescue techniques, as well as live firefighting.

On successful course completion, candidates will be able to:

Understand and minimise the risk of fire on board.
Use onboard equipment, procedures and personal safety requirements in fire situations.
Fight and extinguish fires.
Safely use of Breathing Apparatus

Overalls and protective clothing will be provided, but it is recommended that you bring suitable lightweight working clothes (i.e. socks, shorts and t-shirts) with you.

Assessment

Assessment is by ongoing observation throughout the course and written multi-choice question paper.

Qualifications

This course complies with the STCW Regulation VI/1 paragraph 1 and Section A-VI/1, paragraph 2.1.2 of the STCW Convention and Code 1978, as amended. A Maritime and Coastguard Agency, STCW Certificate of Proficiency in Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting will be issued upon successful completion of the assessment.
