Efficient Deck Hand (EDH)

Who it is aimed at:

Crew working in a deck capacity requiring an EDH certificate and those working towards Able Seafarer Deck (AB) certification under MSN 1862 (M) or MSN 1856 (M+F).

Entry requirements

Candidates must be aged 17 or over and hold the following STCW certification: Personal Survival Techniques, Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting, Elementary First Aid, Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities.
Candidates are also required to hold one or more of the following:
MCA Accepted Yachtmaster Offshore,
Yacht Rating with Steering Certificate and 6 months sea time,
Navigational Watch Rating certificate,
Boatmasters Licence – Tier 1 Level 2,
Tug Rating with Steering Certificate and 6 months sea time.

Candidates will need to bring with them proof of identity (Passport, Seaman’s Discharge Book or other National Identification). Proof of completion of the required certification and sea time will also be required.

About this course

This five-day course aims to give students further knowledge of seamanship and safety and is intended for seafarers who require EDH certification or are working towards AB certification.

Course notes will be provided, and students may take further notes if desired.

Theoretical input is backed up with practical tasks and it is important that candidates actively participate if they are to achieve the knowledge and confidence the course is designed to impart. The course includes:

Understanding of nautical knowledge and terminology
Knowledge of the Code of Safe Working Practices for Merchant Seafarers
Knowledge of anchoring and mooring operations.
Practical knowledge of shipboard maintenance
General understanding of Cargo operations.
Practical knowledge and application of knots, bends and hitches
Practical knowledge and application of splicing in 3 Strand, 8 Strand, Braided and wire rope.
Practical knowledge of deck work, including Bosun’s Chair, Stage, Cranes, Derricks, Hatch Covers and securing a vessel for heavy weather.
Precautions and prevention of pollution to the marine environment

Assessment

Assessment is by ongoing observation and multi-choice written question papers throughout the course and a practical and oral assessment on the last day.

Qualifications

This course complies with the requirements laid down in MSN 1862 (M) and Regulation A-II/5 of the STCW Convention and Code 1978, as amended. A Maritime and Coastguard Agency, Efficient Deck Hand certificate will be issued upon successful completion of the assessment.
