About this course

This is a suite of 3 basic safety training courses suitable for delegates working onboard vessels on the River Thames, who are working towards obtaining a Boatmasters Licence.  The course comprises:
STCW Personal Survival Techniques - 1 day

This 1- day course aims to make students aware of the dangers inherent in survival situations. Students will gain knowledge of life saving equipment and survival techniques and appreciate the importance of onboard emergency drills and exercises. This is an ideal opportunity for students to see and use a life raft in a wet environment.

On successful course completion, candidates will be able to:
Understand the main types of maritime emergencies
Identify and use survival equipment during a maritime emergency
Understand the principles of survival during a maritime emergency
Know how to abandon ship during a maritime emergency
Know how to survive in the water during a maritime emergency
Know how to use a survival craft during a maritime emergency

 

STCW Elementary First Aid - 1 day

The aim is to give all persons going to sea, a basic knowledge of the immediate measures to be taken upon encountering an accident or medical emergency aboard ship.
Theoretical input is backed up by practical exercises, and it is important that candidates participate actively if they are to generate the confidence that the course is designed to impart.

The course covers the following:
Identify types of accidents and emergencies that may require first aid
Methods of raising the alarm and assessing risk to self and casualty
Measures to be taken when accident or medical emergencies occur
Appreciation of body structure and systems relating to first aid
Types and control of bleeding, including use of bandages
Resuscitation techniques to maintain airway, breathing and circulation
Treatment and care of unconscious and choking casualties
Recognise and apply appropriate measures of basic shock management
Apply appropriate measure for burns and scalds, including electric shock
Positioning of casualty according to injury, including fractures
Rescue and transportation of a casualty

BML - Fire Safety - 1 day

This course is intended to give all candidates basic knowledge of fire safety, fire prevention and an understanding of the hazards of fire.

Candidates will understand the need for prompt, safe and correct action to be taken on the outbreak of a fire.

Candidates will experience the use of extinguishers on live fires.

• Chemistry of Fire
• Sources of Ignition
• Fire Spread
• Classification of Fires
• Action on Discovering a Fire
• Principles of First Aid Fire Fighting
• Types and uses of Fire Extinguishers
• Fire Prevention

 

Live Fire Exercises to include:
• Extinguishing Class ‘A’ and ‘B’ Fires with appropriate extinguishers
• Use of CO2 extinguishers
• Approach and use of Fire Blankets
• Demonstration of the dangers associated with chip pan fires
• Demonstration of BLEVE
• Use of hoses and hose reels (Hose management and branch techniques)
• Fire team attack on large Class B fire
• Experience spread of smoke and methods of escape

Assessment

You will be assessed as per each course guideline.

STCW/MCA Approved certification
