This four-day course aims to give students further knowledge of first aid and is intended for seafarers who are designated to provide medical first aid on board ship.

Course notes will be provided, and students may take notes if desired.

Theoretical input is backed up with practical exercises and it is important that candidates actively participate if they are to generate the confidence the course is designed to impart. The course includes:

Understanding of body structure and systems relating to first aid
Contents of first aid kit and use of the equipment
Knowledge of Medical First Aid Guide with regard to dangerous goods
Identify types of accidents and emergencies that may require first aid
Methods of raising the alarm and assessing risk to self and casualty
Measures to be taken when accident or medical emergencies occur
Resuscitation techniques to maintain airway, breathing and circulation
First aid treatment for illnesses with chest pain, breathing problems, poisoning
Familiarisation with medical procedures including radio assistance.
Recognise and apply appropriate measures of basic shock management
Types and control of bleeding, including use of bandages
Apply appropriate measure for burns and scalds, including electric shock
Effects of extreme temperatures including Hyperthermia and Hypothermia
Treatment and care of unconscious and choking casualties
Positioning of casualty according to injury
