Officers and Cadets wishing to improve resource management, leadership and team building skills. A requirement for those undertaking a first Certificate of Competence in a Deck, Engineering or Electro-Technical role.
Learners following an MNTB/MCA approved programme are eligible to undertake this course after the first seagoing phase. Learners following the experienced seafarer route to MCA certification shall meet the minimum seagoing service requirements for the issue of a first CoC.
Candidates will need to bring with them proof of identity (Passport, Seaman’s Discharge Book or other National Identification).
This three-day course aims to give students further knowledge of the personal aspects of leadership and management.
Course notes will be provided, and students may take further notes if desired.
Theoretical input is backed up with discussion and case study tasks and it is important that candidates actively participate if they are to achieve the knowledge and confidence the course is designed to impart. The course includes:
Good practice in shipboard human resource management
The importance of the ‘human element’ in shipboard operations
Knowledge of IMO conventions, national regulations, and codes of practice
Applying elements of workload management, planning and coordination
Resource management, teamwork, assertiveness and situational awareness
Principles and practices of decision making
Managing fatigue and stress
Contribution to shipboard training, learning, assessing and developing crew.
