STCW Personal Survival Techniques (PST)

Who it is aimed at:

Crew and onboard staff requiring STCW Basic Safety Training.
The course is a requirement for all seafarers and a pre-requisite for those who intend to undertake the STCW – Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats course.

 

Entry requirements

Learners must be aged 16 or over. This course contains some exercises that are physically demanding; any learner in doubt about their fitness for such a course should seek medical advice before attending.

Learners will need to bring with them proof of identity (Passport, Seaman’s Discharge Book or other National Identification).

Learners do not have to be able to swim, but will be required to carry out drills in the water whilst wearing a lifejacket.

 

About this course

This 1-day course aims to make learners aware of the dangers in survival situations. Learners will gain knowledge of life saving equipment and survival techniques and appreciate the importance of onboard emergency drills and exercises. This is a great opportunity for learners to experience being in the water and to use a life raft.

On successful course completion, learners will be able to:
Understand the main types of maritime emergencies
Identify and use survival equipment during a maritime emergency
Understand the principles of survival during a maritime emergency
Know how to abandon ship during a maritime emergency
Know how to survive in the water during a maritime emergency
Know how to use a survival craft during a maritime emergency

 

Assessment

Assessment is by participation and ongoing observation throughout the course and two short multi-choice written question papers.

Qualifications

This course complies with the STCW Regulation VI/1 paragraph 1 and Section A-VI/1, paragraph 2.1.1 of the STCW Convention and Code 1978, as amended. A Maritime and Coastguard Agency, STCW Certificate of Proficiency in Personal Survival Techniques will be issued upon successful completion of the assessment.
