Who it is aimed at:

Officers and crew onboard requiring STCW Advanced Fire Fighting Training.

Entry requirements

Candidates must be aged 16 or over. This course contains some exercises that are physically demanding; any candidate in doubt about their fitness for such a course should consult their doctor prior to attendance.

Candidates will need to bring with them proof of identity (Passport, Seaman’s Discharge Book or other National Identification). Proof of completion of the Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting course.

About this course

This 4 day course is designed to give a comprehensive understanding of the theory of fire fighting as it applies in a shipboard environment, and familiarity with the use and maintenance of both fixed and portable fire fighting equipment, including breathing apparatus. Elements of command and control are included, together with the importance of stability and ship integrity. The course is structured round a number of practical search and rescue techniques, casualty evacuation practice and live fire exercises.

On successful course completion, candidates will be able to:

Understand the principals involved in controlling fire fighting operations on board a vessel.
Control fire fighting operations aboard a ship.
Organise and train fire parties.
Inspect and service fire detection and extinguishing systems and equipment.
Investigate and compile reports on incidents involving fire.

Overalls and protective clothing will be provided, but it is recommended that you bring suitable lightweight working clothes (i.e. socks, shorts and t-shirts) with you.

Assessment

Assessment is by ongoing observation throughout the course and written multi-choice question paper on the last day.

Qualifications

This course complies with the STCW Regulation VI/3 paragraph 1 and Section A-VI/3, paragraphs 1 to 4 of the STCW Convention and Code 1978, as amended. A Maritime and Coastguard Agency, STCW Certificate of Proficiency in Advanced Fire Fighting will be issued upon successful completion of the assessment.
